Is this fear unjustified?
It's not like it never happens.
History is full of examples of "society" looting and destroying its productive members "for the good of the people."
It's going on in several nations as I write this, and the noises coming from our new Congress, including punitive taxes, government takeovers, "maximum wages," and other things, aren't reassuring.
