They were slowed considerably by a parachute and then I believe there was a retro rocket that slowed it further before dropping the airbag. Obviously the parachute is not an option but an airbag would prevent the need for a perfect landing ala phoenix. Plus with nano tech the probe(s) and thus the airbags could be considerably smaller than the ones used for the Mars Rovers.
