We're not nearly as destructive as army ants and locusts. Not only do we have the potential to save the planet from an ELE impact, we may even be able to create diverse biospheres elsewhere. If we do that we will have made up for past failures many times oveer. We have also pulled back from the brink on many occasions. We may yet turn out to be the biggest scurge this planet has ever seen, but I think we have the potential to be the biggest boon to biodiversity the galaxy has ever seen (if ETI is very rare).
We need to become a more scientifically literate and forward thinking species than we have been, but that is the trend at least in the west and to a large extent in Asia.

Mark
