I think humans are one of the prime threats to our civilization, and are increasingly likely to self destruct as technology advances especially without commisurate advances in wisdom. However, while civilization may fall, I doubt the species will. A 0.04% survival rate in any of the many 500,000 metropolitan areas on the planet would be a bigger gene and knowledge pool than that which came out of Africa. When it comes to plagues some of the worst cesspits on Earth may be humanities savior due to selective pressure for better immune systems.
Some people learn wisdom from others and accumulate it faster. Maybe some of that genetic change being detected affects that. I also think some accumulated wisdom exists in culture.
