I think a combo of human and robot space exploration and utilization is
the best way to go at present. But since expense and resources are
always key factors even in good economic times, we need to leave the
exploration aspects up to the machines for now and save the manned
missions for colonization efforts, or at least bases that will establish a
permanent foothold for the more ambitious human settlements later.
If we wait for human expeditions to the Sol system, we will be long
gone by the time that happens. That is why machines need to lead
the way to the other worlds and humans can do the follow up and more
detailed exploring once colonies are established.
As for space tourism, perhaps these businesses should lay low for a bit
and work on their development and especially their goals during this
time period. I know there will always be rich people who will shell out
good money for all kinds of thrills, but the general public will perceive
this and all of space flight by extrapolation as the play toys of the
insensitive wealthy, so that by the time space tourism does become
more available to the public, they may reject it due to the perceived
slights during this economic downturn.
Hopefully I am proven wrong on this last point, but this is why it needs
to be more than some expensive joyride and perk for the very people
many see as the ones who placed us in this new Depression to begin
with.
