There is nothing more romantic than a good, trusted friend.

My latest love, my English friend, is a woman about 15 years younger than I, and much, much wiser. She can see completely through me at any level she cares to. And she likes me even so. Laughs at me a lot, I am ridiculous. I've never known anyone like her. I could not deceive her, have no reason to, nor do I think she'd lie to me, but I don't know that.

With her living in England, and me here, there's a bit about which we don't talk. I happen to believe that what people do when I'm not around is none of my business, a belief which has irritated some.

She had multiple sclerosis as a young woman, and was near death any number of times. In effect waterboarded as she stopped breathing. I believe that gives one a perspective on life which is different from folks who haven't been stressed that much. A nice thing to have, a helluva way to get it.

Never having been married, no children and a lifetime of hiking when able to walk has left her not only tough but incredibly independent. I met her a few years ago when she was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. Had been hiking in Australia, then Tasmania, then came to the West Coast and was on the PCT.

On top of that she is beautiful.

I've had intense romances, flings, relationships which have evolved into friendships and vice versa. This one is the best, and all the better because it isn't dependent upon immediate proximity.
