The definition of missing (and dissing) the point in this case is illustrating the shortcomings that you think must exist in the proponents of this publicity strategy.
SInce we're all lathered up for an orgy of ad hominym, I'll point out that both of your brains, Tom and Jake, are clearly pickled to the point of being unable to conceptually comprehend the motive of a disonant notion.
Apparently parroting the strawman de jour is all you can muster.
So, I know you both have to much invested in this "takedown" of the event to probably accept this but try...
In the practice of meditation, simple techniques are employed to encourage mindfulness of one's conditions, surroundings and those of other people. In a similar way, getting "off the grid" for just an hour can promote awareness of our mutual dependence upon and the costs of our technical society.
Just like the purpose of meditation is not to convince yourself to move to a mountain monestary to the end of ones days, the purpose that this hour can have is for more people to proceed more mindfully with the choices we make in our evermore technical society.
The cheapest Watt to generate is the one that doesn't get used.
And, oh yeah. If anyone is impeding the technical progress of modern civilization it's the mindless Rand-bots spamming the internet with the defensive marketing points of obsolete industry's trade groups.
Present company not excluded.
