The internet is probably to blame. Back in the day most conversations, (discussions) were with others of similar views. On the occasions that opposing views came to bear between individuals you had plenty of fireworks in the form of duels, fist fights, and lynchings.
More reasonable discourse was in the form of editorials, radio and TV, or public speaking under controled conditions.
I have no idea where it winds up but I believe we have to keep our sense of humor and try to find some common ground. As an example, I am a bit turned off by your professions of liberalism but I find myself not at all offended by your opinions when they are not cloaked in liberal colors.
