He's a pragmatist because he knows if the US defaults, it's going to be laid squarely on the doorstep of the Republican party who has refused to come to a deal because of the Tea Baggers. Obama is seen as trying to negotiate while the Tea Baggers are obstructionists. They'll pay for it in the next election.
