For every Avian Flu, there's a Great Influenza Epidemic of 1918. The truth is we don't know how widespread this outbreak will be, or how crippling it will be. Statistically, I agree they do tend to fizzle out, but we can never tell ahead of time, especially with the virus's capability to mutate in mid career. The bug and our immune systems are in a Darwinian arms race, and we can never tell ahead of time who will win it.

Sometimes we just have to rely on the specialists and professionals we put in charge of this sort of thing, and we have to recognize they sometimes get it wrong, or cry wolf, or miss the Big One.
