I don't think it's clear that Obama is not being judged on what the economy has done in the short time since he's taken office. He's being judged on what his own predictions are for his next term, the term after that if he gets re-elected, and two years after that. His own predictions show increasing deficits as far as the eye can see, and all of them higher than the highest annual deficit Bush ever delivered.

The "good will" of our adversaries is a misreading of the amused contempt they feel when they think America is a paper tiger. Libya did not disarm because of "good will." North Korea, Iran, and Russia are now comfortably convinced that we've gone paper again, and are doing pretty much whatever they want. As for our allies, Obama has managed to alienate Israel, Britain, and at least two friendly South American nations.

Long past time people stopped reading off the index cards and look out a window.
