Re: The Truth can be ugly and painful, or Why America doesn't count for much anymore.

You're not the first honest man to be blindsided by the bottomless well of self-serving hypocrisy represented by the jingoists and chauvinists and professional patriots that infest our land.

Sure, injustice exists, here as it does everywhere else. But you must resist the temptation to just give up on everything good about this country because you find that there are evil men here, and (perhaps even worse), good men who have allowed themselves to be seduced by their lies. If you insist on applying such absolutist judgments, then tell me, who are the good guys? Where the hell are they? What happy land or time in history is blameless?

You're right, the horror of the Cheney torture club wasn't that it was a desperate measure carried out by panicky men ready to do whatever it took to protect their families and their countrymen. It was an accounting exercise, a cynical legal maneuver, a purely administrative process primarily devised to gain a short term objective, make themselves look good doing it and to protect their own jive asses from prosecution and exposure. For these lowlives, its strictly business. And now their apologists will move mountains to justify those crimes simply because they don't want to call attention to the inhuman singleminded hypocrisy that has insinuated itself with their own domestic economic agenda.

No, as foul as the Bush Whitehouse was, it is not the origin and source of all evil in the world. We still live in a country where we can publicly make a statement like that, where many of us continue to do so every day, to expose these liars and reptiles for the shabby anti-life force they are, and for the moral and intellectual bankruptcy they represent. That is something worth fighting for, and worthy of being proud of. I haven't given up on this country yet.
