Hey Tom, yes... getting self sufficient is one of my goals....having a garden, being closer to local tailgate markets and communiuty farms, etc...having access to fresh water. I even have a small spring on my property I plan to dig out. I can't afford a solar generator or even panels right now, but hopefully in a year or two. Place is great as it's all south facing. And cleared for the most part, a natural bowl.
I have a gas generator set up and some gas put back. It's not wired into my pump yet, but hopefully will be before winter. It's ready to roll as it is.
My water comes from a well 400 ft. underground and I have a heat pump (electric) and AC and a propane gas fireplace.
When the power goes out here, we are the last to get it back on, as we are at the "end of the line" so to speak.
