yes, you could have destroyed, or at least occupied, afghanistan, punished your enemies and avenged your dead. instead, you invaded iraq for its oil wealth, strategic location and military weakness. america certainly demonstrated the character of its military restraint.
but there were unforeseen consequences. you got no oil, your geopolitical position deteriorated, and your military was so weakened that your real enemies no longer fear you. and from the way a vocal minority of the american political spectrum refuses to admit its mistakes, your friends are not convinced you won't make them again.
