And, just as a check on the premise, the 2010 Federal budget, in constant dollars, is three times what it was in 1975. I was around in 1975. Somehow we had roads, we had fire departments, we had schools, we had libraries and national parks. We had sidewalks, cops, street sweepers, garbage pickup, water, and electric power. In fact, we had pretty much all of the things that people put on these little lists when someone is telling me how critical all this spending is.
A few other comparisons: By my best estimate, the military back then, at the height of the Cold War and just after Vietnam, had about a million more active duty people than it has now. Three years prior, in 1972, we landed the last three men on the Moon. Now NASA is cheering the achievement of throwing a solid rocket with a dummy payload into a suborbital hop.
We're being had.
