i saw the show. i wasted my time.
but i think the comparison with y2k was unfair. y2k turned out to be a dud, and the consequences were minor compared to what actually happened, but it wasn't an unreasonable expectation that things might have turned out much worse, and its always better to be safe than sorry. 2012 is a deliberate scam concocted to sell books. it's not just exaggerated and overblown, its fraud. even worse, it has the potential of starting a public panic and hurting people, not just ripping them off for a few dollars. did you see those poor people selling everything they owned and rushing off to hide in underground shelters?
a friend of mine knowledgeable about astronomy tells me these people obviously know enough science to convince him they are not just mistaken, they are deliberately lying.
and even worse, using a popular network tv news anchor like lester to host the show gives it a legitimacy it really does not deserve. i think the whole thing was a publicity stunt for the movie, and i wouldn't be surprised if all the principals in last night's production didn't own a piece of each other, or weren't otherwise linked financially.
