A DVR sees hard use when it's on, running as constantly as any computer that is kept running. Mine automatically records whatever channel it's on for a running block of time so I can turn on the TV and see what I missed on that particular channel if I want. But the hard drive is always going.
I could shut it off entirely if I wanted, of course.
