Ozone holes, ice melting, and trying to fool Mother Nature

Just goes to show you, it's always something.

On a somewhat related note, I am very leery of "geoengineering" ideas.

I was reading about a proposal Bill Gates made about a method of slowing hurricanes by pumping cold deep water to the surface.

Bad idea. Hurricanes are part of nature's immensely complex system of distributing heat energy around the planet, pulling solar heat from the ocean and dissipating it in wind and the condensation of water.

If you pull cold water up so that a hurricane can't tap off the heat, that solar heat is still in the ocean, it's just spread around a bit. Nobody really knows what would happen in the long run, but I'd bet money on heat accumulating without being dissipated, and the mother of all storms being the eventual result.
