TB, ALL lyrics sound chopped up when you print them out. That's why they're called lyrics, they need the music to make any sense. Poetry has rhyme and meter to provide form and structure. In song, the music provides that function. Watch the video while you read the lyric and you can hear that every syllable is in precisely the right place. Wiki's formatting doesn't help much either, in the edit window the lyrics look like poetry...
As far as Clapton, is concerned, I've read his autobiography, and by his own words he comes across a pointless litle man, self-indulgent, ungrateful to his friends, unable to honor a committment, an addictive personality and abusive to those who love him and to those who depend on him professionally, or who have gone out of their way to help him because of the genius they see in him. He seems to have cleaned up his act in his later years, among other things, having engaged in extensive philanthropic activities in the Caribbean (benefitting mostly black people, I might add).
Of course, in your breathless lame attempt at another Aha! moment, you left out his key phrase, "because the UK is still...inviting people in as cheap labour and then putting them in ghettos.", which you may recall is precisely the charge I leveled at American capitalists. I may not agree with Mr Clapton's politics, but he has correctly identified the real villains.
None of that, of course, has anything to with his art. It is the artist that never lies. His talent is inherent, in his genes, and developed by the self-discipline of practice, the only personal virtue needed to bring it out. Almost every artist I've ever met was like that; outside their craft, they are just another human being, much like the rest of us.
