I just read an interview with Cameron and Peter Jackson in Newseek about the anticipated future of 3D film. Cameron thinks they'll be able to lose the glasses for small screen viewing (eg, laptop screen size) within 5 years.
Apparently work's being done to attempt the same with a large screen, though I haven't read anything about the physics/physiology of it. It must be along different lines than the work being done for small screens, which depends on a viewer's eyes being in a "sweet spot."
