If you go to a 3D showing you have to wear the glasses to see anything but a blurry image, if you go to a 2D showing its just like any other movie and the glasses won't work.
The glasses have changed in technology since the early 3D movies. No more red and blue, they use polarization to divide the light to each eye. Beyond that I'm not sure how it works though.
