The phrase "pole shift" has connotations through popular usage that are non-scientific and it does NOT unambiguously refer to a scientific concept.

Even though scientists were not present to witness any previous reversal, they did nonetheless discover them through analysis of rocks on Earth and through studies of numerical self-exciting dynamos. I was at Univeresity with many of the key scientists and they DO get to name things by discovery.
