It does a number of things. Yahoo has a "widget" set that gives me weather, news and stuff. Of course, I can download new TV firmware (I got a red-hot Samsung LED set - the first big thing I've bought myself in years). There are screensavers and games you can download. I don't know if there's enough bandwidth for any decent streaming video, or enough onboard memory to download a movie or something. There's no hard drive (my HD-DVR cable box has a hard drive).
My first TV setup was a cabling nightmare, with several devices feeding in to a one-connection TV through the traditional red-white-yellow cables and through a switching box to control what fed the TV. At one time there was a second coax switch box to allow me to switch from the cable box to direct feed to VHS-tape one thing while watching another. The back of my set looked like a school of squid had washed ashore and died in a pile.
Now, all my components (except the old VHS unit) have nice HDMI plugs, and the TV has four inputs. I switch onscreen. Very nice.
