For the K-12 range, home education works pretty well. You don't need a degree in science to teach an eight-grader science, or more importantly, teach them how to learn on their own.
Nobody is expecting someone to get something like a professional engineering degree by being taught by their parents, but I think our society overlooks what people could learn by actually working at a firm that does engineering. When I went to architecture school, there was a pathway to a degree that involved working for architects for a given number of years and passing certain exams. I don't know if this is still the case, or if it is true for other fields.
Like K-12 education, the university system seems to be decaying into a machine designed to preserve and enrich the university system. In a lot of cases, people come out of a university with a mind that is a lot less useful than the one they had when they entered.
