What you call "pointless bickering" might just be the noise made by people expressing ideas and opinions. Of course there actually is a "point." There's a lot at stake here, and unlike some people I don't consider "ungovernable" a synonym for "opposition."
If you start from the standpoint that the only fun arguments are ones where nobody could possibly win or lose, maybe you should hang out on sports boards, or sailing sites.
So, how about that "America's Cup?"
