Space/Science » in reply to Test driving the Tesla

Maybe next week

Yesterday, I followed a black Tesla merging onto the turnpike, obviously on a test drive. I could sense the driver's anticipation for open highway thwarted by the closely spaced traffic. It was just after morning rush hour, so the traffic was actually up to speed, but still crowded enough that a driver had to mind the gap, and couldn't really open it up. But soon, as traffic opened up, with a bob and a weave, he was gone.

It's a beautiful car. Really. And comfortable, if you don't mind being really close to the ground. It is like sitting in a Lotus. The sitting itself is comfortable, it's the getting in and the getting out that is a different maneuver than one is used to. Even for the limber.

By the way, the dealership here is not called a dealership. It's a "Gallery", located on the same downtown street as the famous pedestrian mall with its many resturants and art galleries. Been there a couple of times, sat in the Roadster, held discourse with the sales-people, opened the hood and the trunk, even kicked the tires, just for a laugh. Beyond my means, of course, but I think I'd like to drive it, just once, on a open highway. Or if they'll let me, up the canyon, to the road that runs at the top of the foothills and at the base of the real mountains, a winding delight of asphalt known 'round here as the "Peak to Peak" highway.

Hopefully, enough movie stars, dot-com millionaires, captains of industry, or anyone else with 100K of fed reserve notes just laying around will invest them in buying a Tesla, and the next, less expensive version (due soon), will also be in demand, enough to bring the price down to a point where there is a Tesla for the rest of us. From talking to their representatives at the Gallery, this is the long term plan.
