It's the filthy rich buying these things when they're ruinously expensive that make it eventually possible for the rest of us to afford them.
I remember a couple of people at science fiction conventions lording it over us with their new HP-65 calculators, which at the time were about eight hundred dollars. That's close to $3,000 bucks in today's ruined dollars.
I'm still using my HP-41C every day.
