34,000 deaths on the roads in the USA?
In australia - a country with similar distances, but a smaller population, we had approx 1,500 deaths last year (and the year before and the year before that...)

USA has 308 million population, Australia 22 million. Your accident rate is 163% of ours, and is comparable to Australian rates in 1990. You've got a long way to go in building road safety as a culture!
