I have discovered over time that a lot of people who try to blow smoke into a debate are blowing smoke for a reason.
When you are watching a subject being discussed, a good touchstone is to see which side tries to confuse the issue and make it as incomprehensible as possible. Which side talks about uncertainties, how nothing is really what it seems, there's no "right or wrong answer," and how nobody can really be right on any issue anyway.
See which side needs to run an explanation out for 17 rambling minutes when the answer should take 17 seconds, making sure that clarity never emerges, and that any real conclusions are hidden in the smoke.
Sometimes both sides will be doing it. Then you really have to figure things out yourself.
