The organisms on a farm have one purpose: to serve the farmer. The organisms in a natural system serve themselves. This is a significant difference, and I still think the metaphor holds up pretty well.

"Meeting human needs" is kind of a foggy concept. Which needs? Certainly you can agree that a farmer takes pretty good care of his corn. Key word being "his."
