George Wallace? Robert Byrd? Al Gore Sr.? Lester Maddox? Ernest Hollings? J. William Fulbright? Sam Ervin? No, to the best of my knowledge all of those stayed Democrats until the ends of their careers. How about the complete list of Democratic Senators who voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964? How many ended up Republicans? How about all those Democrats who stood in schoolhouse doors?
