My theory
Auto makers make a huge profits by selling engine and drivetrain parts. These will disappear with the advent of the electric car.
Car dealerships will suffer because of drastically reduced repair and maintenance revenue. No oil to change, no sensors to make your check engine light come on, no fuel pumps to go out or injectors to clog, no water pumps to fail or radiators to leak or thermastats to stick and no mufflers to rust or catalitic converters to clog.
Electric cars won't be the norm until oil companies have no more product to sell. It's all about $$$$$
