I've seen them promote non-approved uses for their drugs which is what got Pfizer in so much trouble. The FDA has to approve a drug for ALL uses the Pharmaceutical company markets it for. But if they found it was good for something else, too, they'd go around to the various doctors and tell them about the off-label use and how it could help their patients, blah, blah, blah. In bypassing the FDA, they could not then as easily track when bad things happened from usage of the drugs and adverse events might get blamed onto proper use of the drug instead of for the off-label use. There are reasons they can't market drugs for off-label use. If they market drug A for gallstones and then find out it helps Alzheimers but it hasn't been studied in clinical trials for that use, they won't know that when they use it for Alzheimers, it causes stroke because of some mechanism of interaction that doesn't apply with gallstones. (This is just a hypothetical but shows how off-label use can have bad consequences.)
