Some good questions. If you find anything with more details on how the current Speaker travels, and who pays for what, I'd like to see it. I haven't seen anything along those lines yet. I have no problem with the taxpayer picking up reasonable expenses for a public official. The key word being "reasonable." As with everything else the government spends money on, transparency would be a plus. Note that they had to launch a Freedom of Information request to find out what they did.
It gets way too easy for people to get used to the perks of power, and the list of special privileges available to things like Congressmen and Senators has been a long one over the years. As just one of many examples, they've only been paying into Social Security like the rest of us peons since 1983.
