From 1923 to 1952 there wasn't an organized radical Islamist movement trying to eat that entire part of the world. True democratic candidates have to win every election. The radicals only have to win one.
So, what the Middle East really needs for progress is to have a large Muslim democracy plunked down in the middle of it? Interesting theory. Think I've heard it somewhere before.
