I have a Smart Meter. I didn't see a lot of upside to making a big stink about it, and out here in California it takes kind of a big stink to keep them away.
There's actually some sense in pricing power by time of day. I have no real objection to that. Demand is a legitimate price driver, and I have to admit my online access now gives me a lot more information on when and where I use electricity. It's my choice how much power to use and when, and if I want to use the more expensive or cheaper watts I can. All of these prices are heavily regulated, and I assume PV upload rates would be too.
If, or when, the government or company (with our "public" utility it's hard to figure out which is which) decides to ration my power based on their political delusions, which is what the news story I posted was discussing, it might be another story.
I am still fascinated by the weird dichotomy where people will accept endless abuse and looting from their governments, but will go to the barricades if a bank charges them an ATM fee.
