When my cousin Rudy came to the US in the Pedro Pan program, he remarked on this.
He went to high school with me, and he told me,
"What is it with you guys? Why do you hate smart people? Everybody acts dumb, even the people who are smart make every effort to hide it, except maybe from each other. It's like they are ashamed of it. In Cuba, there used to be smart people, and stupid people, just like here, but it had nothing to do with how popular you were, or how well liked. You could be an A+ student and still be a star athlete, or a bully, or the class clown, or the troublemaker, the teacher's pet or the rebel, the lady's man or the gay kid. But here, nobody likes you if you're smart. What is wrong with you people?"
I knew he was right, and I had no answer for him.
