You know how I feel about the Storms of this world, pretty much the same way you do, right? But what happens when you start congratulating yourself too much on not being Storm? What happens when you simply can't dismiss someone who has a fundamental disagreement with you as being just another Storm?
What happens when you realize people can be a Storm and not realize it, or be a Storm about some things and not others? What happens when you see two bonafide non-Stormers bitterly disagree in how to interpret the exact same data? How can you convince yourself you're not a Storm yourself?
One of the most intelligent and capable men I ever met, a CEO and philanthropist and visionary in his industry, had PhDs in Nuclear Physics AND Theology; he was an ordained Protestant minister. He ran the multi-million dollar company that handled all the public relations and liaison work for the Nuclear Power Industry and the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge TN. He interviewed and hired me for my first real job out of school.
How can you reconcile that contradiction? I knew one of us was a Storm, but what gave me the right to think it had to be him? I realized right then I didn't know for sure. I had no way of knowing, and all the science in the world wasn't going to help me find out.
No, I didn't abandon my fundamental beliefs. I just learned a little humility.
