A minority - largely determined by socio-economic status, not religion- have exploited the fact that police are stretched thin by the protests and are looting.
The right wing (especially the right wing here in the US) has, of course, tried to make the French riots about race and religion- just as they try to make the problems of the destitute inner cities all about race... it boils down to bigotry.
If you segregate out a segment of society and make sure that they are destitute and hopeless, naturally that will lead to higher rates of crime and violence from that segment of society... to then turn around and cite that result as proof that 'those people' are inherently prone to be criminals is particularly diabolical...
The logical contortions that come from this are pretty impressive when you step back and take a clear look at it- have you noticed that the opiate addicts- largely white- are portrayed as victims, while the minority populations plagued by drugs are portrayed as thugs?
French Algerians that came over to help rebuild post-war France... they entered France at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, discrimination greatly restricted the social mobility of these people- ensuring that a large fraction stayed at the bottom rung of the ladder. Housing segregation leaves people trapped in the original communities that were built around jobs that disappeared as France de-industrialized - leading to ghettos- high concentrations of people at the bottom rung of the ladder, with legitimate reasons to feel the deck is stacked against them.
These concentrations of poverty, unemployment, and anger are overwhelmingly the descendants of African Muslim immigrants- but the right wing wants you to forget about the history and tries to paint it as a 'Muslim' problem... or an 'immigrant' problem- when it is an economic problem that was created and maintained in large part by discrimination.

The Vast majority of the protesters are peaceful with legitimate issues
