Thanks Dan, this was news to me. After doing a bit of searching I found out a bit more in my Office 2000.

If you want to find out where word puts that file, or want to change it click on:

Tools
Options
File Locations tab

Autorecover files

shows where it is being saved, double clicking allows you to modify the save location.
