Turning/Critical Point A Better Term?
Your point is valid. Perhaps turning or critical point are better terms. They do not necessarily imply the direction of the war has changed or that victory is at hand. Just a key point in the war.
I stand by the comment that turning the tide is inappropriate. That does strongly imply the direction of the war has changed.
