What's interesting is that we in the US continue to regard ourselves as an honorable nation dedicated to the rule of law and the world leader in Human Rights. We aren't, anymore.
The "break" comes when we say that all the above is true, and we don't have to behave honorably if we don't agree witht he law or respect Human Rights if the person irritates us.
IF ONLY EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THE CIRCUMSTANCES THEY'D UNDERSTAND how we think we are dedicated to the rule of law when the laws are "right" and we are interested in Human Rights EXCEPT for those who don't deserve rights.
Completely dedicated to the rule of law. Except. Completely dedicated to Human Rights. Except.
But a great nation cannot pick and choose which laws to obey AND consider itself dedicated to the "rule of law". No more than you or I could do that. You and I can't "pre-emptively" club someone who doesn't pose an immediate threat to us. Wouldn't be legal.
Anyone can do "it" when it's easy, it's a great nation and/or person who can do "it" when "it's" hard.
Arf (great nations and great people act that way - bullies pick fights)
