You said that you won't vote for a Democrat based on the racist composition of the party in the 1950s. This ignores the fact that many former Democrats jumped ship to the Republican Party once the Democrats began to sponsor civil rights legislation. (George Wallace, who couldn't bring himself to become a Republican, ran as an independent.)
Simplistic is as simplistic does.
