Re: Nice try

You have negelected to include all of the history, so here's the rest:

Southern white-supremacist politicians were Democrats because the Republicans were "The Party of Lincoln" - you know, those Damn Yankees who whupped the Glorious Confederacy, abolished slavery and unleashed the carpetbaggers on the smouldering remains of Atlanta. No way in God's Hell was a self-respecting Southerner going to align himself with the Republican Party! How many of those good ol' boys ran unopposed, election after election? How many Republican candidates openly opposed Jim Crow?

Why is the new governor of Georgia the first Republican in that office since Reconstruction? For that matter, why does any Republican elected to any office south of Richmond seem to be "the first since Reconstruction"?

In other words, you have confused local politics - for instance, Jim Crow - with party identification. If Lincoln had been a Democrat, the crackers would have become Republicans, and you'd be tarring that party with the brush instead.

The only known member of Congress that was a member of the KKK is Democrat Rob Byrd of West Virginia. Why does he get off with his past?

When the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was before Congress, more Republicans voted for it than Democrats. Gore's father voted against the legislation, as did Clinton's mentor Fullbright. Funny how they're given a pass.

The history of the Democrat party in the South is one of bigotry and corruption.

Like I said, you have it backwards: the history of politics in the South was, for far too long a time, one of bigotry and corruption - the party with which the perpetrators identified had nothing to do with their beliefs or behavior, except to illustrate more bigotry, against Republicans.

I grew up with that nonsense and refuse to have anything to do with it.

Now that is a hopeful sign.
