Re: A Gulf War Veteran Speaks Out

Actually, a good deal of the original Gulf War WAS about oil.

Amazed?

We were defending Kuwait from invasion, but no one has made any bones about the fact that a large part of our motivation was preventing Saddam Hussein from getting a hammerlock on the entire Mideast supply of oil. Had we sat on our hands while he absorbed Kuwait, no one had the slightest doubt that the Saudis would have been next.

And regardless of all the holier-than-thou crap we get from various liberals, oil is criticial to our existence. To YOURS. And barring a technogical miracle, it will be for some time. Even if all our cars suddenly started magically running on tap water, we would still need oil for the immense petrochemical industry.

Keeping a lunatic from obtaining control of a large chunk of the world supply of oil, or ANY vital natural resource, is actually a damned good reason to go to war.

You will note that once we fixed things so we could buy oil from Kuwait again, we gave them back the wells, after extinguishing them first, and left.

Getting our insights from the "Socialist Worker" now, are we? ;)
