Non-violent martyrs always get better results. Jesus, Gandhi or even look at MLK who has his own holiday and is forever remembered fondly. How fondly is Malcolm X or are the Black Panthers remembered?
I don't think there would've been a much longer wait for the civil rights bill as many folks were becoming more socially aware of the plight of the negro in America.
Just as today folks like Sheen who chain themselves and froth at the mouth actually hurt the protest movement and turn it into just another cause for the limousine liberals.
"Violent-peace-protests" or "Civil Disobedience" are oxymorons and most of the public intuitively knows that.
Frothing at the mouth abortion protesters or peace protesters will get the same response from poor John Q. Public - the cold shoulder.
At least that's my take on it,
