Don't know if this applies, but a lot of power supplies will shut down if they get too hot (usually because the fan seized, but sometimes due to dust or too much load), then when they cool they reset and will work again. Could be a cheap&easy fix - cleaning or a new fan; otherwise a whole power supply isn't too expensive as long as they didn't make it too hard to get at.
