Phil is right! Boredom vs. anticipation

Phil is right. A flight to Mars even though it can take 3-4 months to get to Mars is NOT boring because people are anticipating something exciting in the future. I remember the 3 day voyages of Apollo to the Moon tended to be a bit slow but there was still public excitement in anticipation of their arrival to the lunar surface. ISS in stark contrast offers almost no anticipation of anything exciting in the future except (heaven forbid) an accident. Except for the principle investigators, people are not going to get excited about growing protein crystals or the effects of reduced gravity on white mice. I'm being optimistic here that there really will be experiments on protein crystals and reduced gravity. As it stands with it's 3 astronaut crew, the ISS has no real mission except to burn up money.
