The simple answer is platinum group metals. The only near term potential alternative to internal combustion engines are fuel cells. But they can never be produced at any price in sufficient quantities to make an difference with the reserves of PGM's available on Earth. The Moon should have asteroid impact sites with enough of these metals to favorably alter the equation.
