I'll take a page out of Antarctic exploration from almost a century ago:
When those early intrepid explorers of the Antarctic continent wanted to extend
the range of their explorations of that icy continent all the way to the South Pole they established various "supply-depots" and "tents"
at mapped & identified intervals between
the Antarctic coast and the SP.
To morph that idea into a lunar-exploration "emergency contingency" proposal, all future
lunar-explorers should be required
to plant emergency inflatable shelters ["lunar-tents" made of spacesuit materials?] with all the necessary
minimum "life-support" materials [air, water, food, medicine] at regular intervals leading away from the primary
lunarbase or settlement, perhaps kept
apart at intervals of 40 miles or so.
cheers.

Another alternative presents itself.
